A state of contrasts, Nevada is well know for Las Vegas, but less so for its natural beauty,
picturesque scenery, old western history and array of outdoor activities. As one of
the most mountainous states and the 7th largest in the USA, there is plenty outside
of Las Vegas for visitors to explore. Beginning in Las Vegas, our seven night fly-drive
takes you around the state, including the Loneliest Road, part of the old Pony Express
Trail, through old mining towns, past wide expanses of open spaces and in to national
parkland.
The itinerary below is a suggestion, but we are happy to tailor make a fly-drive to your
own requirements if this is not what you are looking for.
Day 1
Arrive in Las Vegas and spend two nights in this amazing 24 hour a day
city. Try your luck in the casinos, take in a world-class show, enjoy great
shopping and fine dining, or simply relax by your hotel pool in the year-
round sunshine.
Day 3
Collect your hire car and drive to Tonopah, approx. 210 miles. En-route
take a drive through Death Valley or stop at Rhyolite, one of Nevada’s
numerous ghost towns.
Stay one night in Tonopah, site of one of the West’s biggest silver strikes
in 1900. Explore the Historic Mining Park where you can see the actual
mines that created the town.
Day 4
Head for Eureka today, approx. 165 miles. On the way stop at Belmont
one of Nevada’s oldest and largest ghost towns, before joining Highway
50 – the Loneliest Road in America. While it is known for its desolation,
Highway 50 has been at the heart of Nevada history, particularly in Pony
Express times.
Eureka prides itself on being the ‘Friendliest Town on the Loneliest Road’
and is a lovely small town with many beautifully restored historic
buildings, including the Eureka Opera House, County Court House and
Sentinel Museum. Overnight for one night in Eureka.
One of the other great highlights of Eureka is the great outdoors – hiking,
biking and fishing all abound in the area.
Day 5
Head further into north-eastern Nevada today, to Elko, approx. 115
miles. Stay one night in the cowboy town of Elko.
Elko is a thriving city surrounded by the towering, craggy, snow-capped
Ruby Mountains, also known as the Alps of Nevada. Outdoor activities
abound and visitors can enjoy ATVing, mountain climbing, hiking, biking,
fishing and more, all within minutes of the downtown area.
Visitors should also not miss a visit to the Northeastern Nevada Museum
which provides a great insight into the history of mining, ranching and
native culture within the state.
Day 6
Today you will travel south to Ely, approx. 190 miles, where you will stay
for two nights. At the eastern end of Highway 50, Ely is a graceful mining
town where vintage buildings have been revitalised through a city-wide
mural project. More than 25 murals decorate the town, providing a
glimpse of Ely’s colourful and ethnically diverse history, which included
the Spanish, French, Italian, Slavic, Asian and Greek.
Enjoy a visit to the Nevada Northern Railway and Museum where you can
take a trip on the Ghost Train – an early 20th Century mining railroad.
On your second day in Ely take a trip to Great Basis National Park, where
you can take a guided tour of the underground passages at Lehman
Caves or hike to Bristlecone Forest, where some of the ancient trees are
nearly 3000 years old. Known for its high mountain terrain, the park
boasts cascading mountain streams, Alpine lakes and even a small glacier.
Day 8
Return to Las Vegas, approx. 240 miles. Either return home from Las
Vegas today, or spend another few nights in Las Vegas.
Prices start from £ 730 per person, including return flights from London to Las Vegas, 7
days car hire and 7 nights room-only accommodation.
